You must have eaten sol/kokum kadhi with plain rice, but ever tried kokum chutney?Kokum is very popular along the coast of Maharashtra and is widely used in curries and sabzis. There are many different ways to use kokum in your diet. It is known to have a cooling effect on the body and its sherbet is known to provide instant energy and prevent fatigue on a hot sunny day.
Apart from having a cooling effect, kokum is also known to boost the digestive system and prevent constipation and acidity. It is rich in dietary fibre and low in calories which makes it heart healthy too. A study published in the International Food Research Journal says that a kokum-horse gram mix for weight loss is very effective. Kokum is rich in antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties too. It is commonly added to fish and other curries and is used to make sol kadhi, an excellent appetiser. But not many know about this kokum chutney. If you want to reap the health benefits of kokum , the kokum chutney is quick to make and doesn’t involve a lot of shenanigans. Here’s the recipe–
Ingredients
A handful of Kokum
2 green chillies
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
Salt, to taste
Sugar or jaggery, to taste
Method
Soak the kokum in warm water for 15 to 20 minutes. Squeeze the water out and grind the kokum with green chillies, cumin seeds, salt and sugar. You can later adjust the taste to your liking by adding salt and sugar. Use the water you soaked the kokum in. You can also add coriander seeds along with cumin seeds for that extra zing.
Do not throw the excess water you soaked the kokum in. Use it make sol kadhi.
